What is different about SvelteLife?
There are many differences between SvelteLife and other programs - the main one is that SvelteLife is only interested in long-term results. Dr. Cluff discourages any weight loss modality that results in only short-term (i.e., not true) success, such as diets, pills, supplements, meal plans, and any extreme measures. It is crucial never to start anything to lose weight that will not or cannot be continued for life. As soon as you stop doing it, all the weight will return, and then some, especially if the weight was lost rapidly. The skeleton of SvelteLife is a specialized goal-setting system called the SvelteSelf Map, which guides patients steadily down the road to long-term weight loss.

Does SvelteLife work?
It may seem odd to say this, but similar to other programs, SvelteLife works if you follow it. However, compared to the grand majority of other programs, the changes you make with SvelteLife are simpler and therefore maintainable for life, i.e., built only for long-term success. Since most other programs are too difficult to follow for the rest of your life, they eventually fail. Importantly, SvelteLife also gives you the highest chance of long-term success for many other reasons. Because Dr. Cluff has a unique understanding of what is behind the obesity epidemic, he has been able to develop specialized systems to address these issues.

How did Dr. Cluff become interested in weight loss?
His whole program has grown out of his own struggle with weight loss (necessity is the mother of invention) and what he has learned as he has applied the principles he has learned to his patients. He tells patients that he is a 350-pound man in a 210-pound body (he's 6'5"). That's probably how much he would weigh had he not developed the SvelteLife system (he gained 40 pounds during the first few years of marriage, jumping from 195 to 235 pounds). He has a unique understanding of one's drive to eat, based on experience with his own drive and observations of his family, patients, and others. Because of this understanding, he has developed many strategies and tools to manage or suppress this drive.

Does SvelteLife offer weekly support groups?
No. From 2003-2006, Dr. Cluff held weekly support groups called SvelteShops. He hoped to offer a more medically-oriented and cheaper alternative to other support groups, and to provide much needed support, accountability, knowledge, and troubleshooting. Prior to starting them, he knew there were many potential barriers to attendance, including the 1) cost, 2) time, and 3) travel requirement. What he did not anticipate was a 4th barrier, which was the greatest of them all: The embarrassment factor. Even if they paid in advance, most participants who gained (or didn't lose) weight after the previous meeting did not want to attend the following week, figuring they'd attend a different week (the chances of which fell with each passing week). Very few continued long-term, or continued to lose after they stopped attending. Because of this and other reasons, Dr. Cluff feels strongly that weekly support groups are a failed model for long-term success. He also feels strongly that his SvelteLife Online program, especially if preceded by the SvelteShop: Crash Course in Weight Management, provides all the benefits at the same time overcoming all the barriers. The cost is low, the time is minimal, you do not have to travel anywhere, and accountability is anonymous (and in fact earns money back for the participant!).
